Welder Severely Burned in Large Explosion

A man is being treated for serve burns in Lubbock following a large explosion at a highway construction material business on U.S. HWY 67 South.

Roughly around 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning, emergency responders were called to CSA Materials, INC., located just south of San Angelo.

Officials say a contract welder was working on top of a tank filled with diesel and asphalt. The diesel vent gases ignited with the arc welder causing the tank to rupture.

During the explosion, the man was thrown from the tank and suffered major burns. He was airlifted to the burn center at UMC in Lubbock.

Firefighters worked at the scene for quite some time to prevent a secondary explosion.

Personnel from the Dove Creek Volunteer Fire Department, the San Angelo Fire Department and Goodfellow Air Force Base all responded to the scene.
