Violence Seminar for Salon Professionals

News

The Tom Green County against Violence is reaching out to salon professionals to support victims of violent crime.

They hosted ‘Cut it Out’, a training seminar for salon professionals. Approximately 30 salon professionals attended the event on Monday to receive training on the dynamics of family violence, the effects of family violence on children, resources available to victims, and human trafficking.

Salon Professionals are in a unique position to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse in their clients and co- workers. They may see signs of physical abuse that others may never see.

Many do not make an outcry to police or even go to a shelter. However, salon professionals can talk about the abuse, the cycle of violence, the warning signs and available resources in the community.

Because salon professionals are skilled and experienced listeners, many victims feel comfortable in confiding in them. For an abused women, the salon may be the ideal environment to seek out help. He may not be there accompanying her, so his power and control is limited at the salon.
