The third oldest Jewish congregation in Texas resides in San Angelo

What has been perceived to be an abandoned building off of West Beauragard Avenue, really lies the third oldest Jewish congregation in the state of Texas.

President of Congregation Beth Israel, Ami Mizell-Flint, says, “it originally broke ground in 1928. opened in 1929. “

In fact, it is a historical marker for those passing through to join in and celebrate the Sabbath.

“We had a rabbi come through from Tyler, Texas. He was on a vacation with his family and he specifically stopped here and asked if we wanted him to participate in the service. So, of course I let him lead for us. And then we have a rabbi from Houston, who kind of adopted us as her West Texas congregation,” says Mizell-Flint.

Although it is a Jewish synagogue, non-Jewish community members do what they can to help, especially during memorial services, such as the one Congregation Beth Israel had for those who passed in the synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“We had about 150 people here and there were nine different clergy members here from various churches around town. It showed me that the community is very interested in what we do,” says Mizell-Flint.

Ami says the support of fellowship houses might have began around the time the first churches were built in town.

“A Jewish landowner donated the property downtown, for the churches, to build their churches, when San Angelo was first becoming a city, and then when our building was built the churches cam together to help raise money for the synagogue to built,” says Mizell-Flint.

The community often comes together to help donate and fundraise for the temple.

“It’s a very San Angelo way of doing things, that we all support each other,” says Mizell-Flint.

The congregation meets for Sabbath every Friday evening at 7:30.
