Texas parks and wildlife stock Concho River with trout

News

After gearing up earlier in the week for, Texas Parks and Wildlife fisheries division is ready to distribute thousands of rainbow trout to local waters all across Texas. This initiative includes the North Concho River section in downtown San Angelo. In total, about 170 local ponds, lakes, and waterways will be stocked with the fish, which this time of year can survive in the now colder waters of the state.

Lynn Wright, the San Angelo district TPW fisheries biologist, explained the activity. “This is a part of our neighborhood fishing program,” said Wright. “In the wintertime we stock rainbow trout. So this was our first stocking of the year and 664 rainbow trout just went into day. And so we’re putting these out here in the wintertime to create a unique winter fishery so that people here in San Angelo can come fish for some trout, catch trout, and enjoy some wintertime fishing.”

After the last stocking event of the season, which will be in February, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department estimates over 2,600 trout will have been added to the Concho River. By the end of winter, a whopping 330,000 trout will have been distributed by Texas Parks and Wildlife for the enjoyment of local anglers.

Partners of TPWD that help fund the fish stocking include Field and Stream sporting goods, the San Angelo chapter of Safari Club International, and even Toyota – which sponsors an annual fishing tournament. The 2018 Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department took place this May in Jonestown, TX on Lake Travis.
