SAPD Offers Social Media Tips Following Cleveland Shooting Post on Facebook

Following the shooting of a Cleveland man being posted on Facebook, San Angelo Police are offering their suggestions on how residents should handle situations involving inappropriate or violent videos posted on social media platforms.

Officer Tracy Gonzalez says residents should follow social media guidelines when reporting these posts and encourage others to do so–while also calling their local law enforcement agency and filing a report with that agency.

She says the Cleveland murder and other violent incidents posted on social media are a “human” issue and not a technological one.

The San Angelo Police Department, for example, uses Twitter and Facebook to provide tips to the public and share information regarding traffic accidents and street closures.

Officer Gonzalez says social media platforms, however, should not be used as the primary contact for SAPD during distress calls.

Residents should continue using the normal 9-1-1 number or a number designated for anonymous tips when provided by the police department.
