SAPD locate crash suspect on the roof of Stripes on Knickerbocker

San Angelo Police have charged a San Angelo man with driving while intoxicated after he fled a crash scene and tried to hide from police on the roof of a local convenience store late Tuesday night.

San Angelo Police responded to a hit and run crash involving a light pole in the 5500 block of Sherwood Way around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night. While en route, other officers learned a witness was following the suspect vehicle.

Officers were directed to the Stripes convenience store at 7410 Knickerbocker Road where they observed the suspect’s vehicle, a 2011 Ford Pickup, in the parking lot. Officers were then directed to the back of the building where the suspect was observed climbing to the store’s rooftop.

The suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Andrew East, was eventually taken into custody without further incident.

Subsequent to the follow-up investigation, East was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to the Tom Green County Jail. East received a citation for Fail to Stop and Leave Information-Duty upon Striking Structure/Fixture/Highway Landscaping.
