San Angelo Nature Center has a new resident

The Nature Center has a new feathery friend, named “Roger”! Rooger is a macaw and is a bird that is native to Central and South America and mexico. Selina Mcsherry, the Nature Center Coordinator, says “these being exotic birds and exotic animals, we really dont know that much about them, so being able to teach little kids or even adults about them, everything that they can do, its a really fun thing.”

Caring for a macaw is not an easy task…it is compared to taking care of a child “they need all the attention in the world, and he requires someone talking to him, someone playing with him, someone dancing with him, feeding him and at the same time giving him treats but knowing which treats he can and cant have” said McSherry.

McSherry mentioned “Roger” gets treats for doing new tricks and saying new phrases “they’re highly intelligent animals, so he can hear the phone ring maybe one or two times and he’ll start mimicking the sound of the phone ringing or he will bark like a dog, hes been very very good at barking like a dog, he likes to scream whenever he needs his attention, sometimes he’ll scream ‘MOM! MOMMA!’ and then I know roger needs me so then i’ll go over there and talk to him for a bit.”

Macaws can live to be 80 years old on average and can be a lifelong friend. To see “Roger” in action you can visit him at the Nature Center.
