Porch pirating is on the rise over the holiday season with increased home deliveries

Over 750 million packages were delivered just last holiday season.

The Owner of the San Angelo UPS Store, Lorry Minor, says, “and that’s just UPS not the other carriers.”

The holiday season means an increase in home deliveries.

The Public Information Officer for San Angelo Police Department, says, “we see these thefts occurring, whether there is one package on the porch or ten packages on the porch.”

A safe way to insure that you get your packages is that you can send it straight to UPS, where they can sign for your packages, or you can rent out a mailbox with them.

“It’s called the UPS My Choice program, and you just do that online, have your valuable delivered here, where you do a signature and just pick up,” says Minor.

If you do not want to go through a mail carrier, you can request a signature at delivery or a secondary address, like a business.

“If you happen to live in an apartment complex have them delivered to your apartment’s office,” says Officer Gonzalez.”

Officer Gonzalez says it is a time for neighbors to come together and look out for each other. However, if you do not know your neighbors, there are other options, such as surveillance cameras.

“As more and more people have door bell cams or home security systems, we are able to catch these criminals by capturing their image,” says Officer Gonzalez.”

In the off chance your package is stolen, there are ways to be insured.

“If we pack your items for you, you’re insured for the minimum $100. It’s trackable, if it gets lost, damaged porch pirated, you’re safe and there is not going to be any questions asked,” says Minor.

Lorry says the deadline to get your packages in for the holidays is the Friday before Christmas.
