SAN ANGELO, TX – Vitalant in San Angelo, formerly United Blood Services, is holding a blood drive through Memorial Day at their Beauregard offices and also at Fuzzys Tacos on Sherwood Blvd. Vitalant encourages community businesses to host blood drives in conjunction with their office due to both the pressing need for blood and the timing for supply availability.
“You know the reason we’re doing that is that what we consider to be an adequate supply of blood on hand is three days,” said Linda Grace, Donor Recruitment Supervisor for Vitalant. “So can you imagine if we were not taking donations for three days. It would put us, the supply level, in a very precarious position.”
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate higher accident frequency around holidays, with Texas ranking among the worst for these kinds of accidents.
The blood type that is most prevalently needed during this time is the O-negative blood type, owing to the fact that it is a universal blood type that can be safely transfused into anyone. According to staff at Vitalant, there is relatively little that disqualifies someone from donating whole blood, plasma, or platelets, so check with them if you’re still unsure.
