San Angelo ISD one of 14 top contenders

San Angelo Independent School District has made it into the final round of consideration for a 5-year leadership program by the Holdsworth Center. The Holdsworth Center, a leadership institute for Texas public schools founded by H-E-B CEO and chairman Charles Butt, recognizes and extends leadership programs to only a select few school districts.

“We’re just, extremely excited,” said Derrick Jackson, SAISD Director of Communication. “Very very excited about it. It’s a great opportunity for our community, for our district, for our staff, for our school board. It’s very good for a lot of folks obviously.”

SAISD submitted an application to the Holdsworth Center earlier in the fall to compete for a spot. Only 6 districts in Texas, out of 1,022, are selected. The final announcement is expected in April 2019.

“So the next phase,” said Jackson, “is that the Holdsworth group will have their executive leadership team come out to all the 14 districts – I believe the goal for that visit is the month of February.”

Texas school districts with 6,000 students or more were eligible to apply. In October, SAISD completed the application process that included detailed responses to 9 questions. They also submitted a letter of support from SAISD school board president Lanny Layman.

“It’s a five year cohort,” Jackson explained. “So its a long range plan – really the goal of it is developing leaders. Both at the campus levels as far as teachers go, leadership in our students, and leadership in our staff. It’s really about building the next generation of leaders.”
