News at Noon: ARES member Matt Healy discusses Saturday’s SKYWARN training

News

Tom Green Country ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) member Matt Healy (call sign W5MAT) discusses the upcoming SKYWARN Training offered by the National Weather Service this Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

The National Weather Service is providing this important public training on how to be a storm spotter during severe weather events. Participants learn what to look for in the clouds and be able to report current conditions accurately to help provide “ground truth” to the NWS.

Due to the nature of radar, often what can be seen on the radar screen is actually thousands of feet above the area of interest. By having “boots on the ground,” these essential trained spotters can relay relevant and accurate information about what is happening on the ground back to the San Angelo NWS office, which can then act upon that information for the public’s safety.
