Texas game wardens are reporting an “alarming” spike in deaths on Texas lakes.
As of Friday, the Texas parks and wildlife department reported more than a dozen boating-related fatalities in the state.
Assistant commander, Cody Jones, says half of those have involved kayaks.
Jones says one of the biggest violations he sees is children not wearing life jackets, which is illegal in Texas.
Jones says, “Fourth of July is always that kind of dropping point where we see a lot of fatalities occur and we want to change that trend. We want to change it by putting in a few simple tips and making sure the public is aware. Life jackets are one of the easiest tips we can provide them.”
According to the state law anyone under the age of 13 must be wearing a life jacket in the boat at all times.
And anyone older must have a life jacket with them that is easy to reach.
