Iraan School Bus Crash Leaves 1 Dead, 7 Others Injured

National News

An Iraan cheerleading sponsor is dead after a bus carrying a group of cheerleaders from a playoff game collided into an 18-wheeler on Interstate 20 near Big Spring late last night.

According to DPS officials, the 18-wheeler was traveling eastbound on interstate-20 when it lost control after reportedly attempting to avoid rear-ending the vehicle in front of it.

The 18-wheeler then crossed the center median and entered the westbound lane of interstate-20 and struck the school bus carrying the cheerleaders

DPS officials also say 7 other people–including Iraan High School cheerleaders–were injured in the accident and are being treated by medical personnel, with one in critical condition and another listed in serious condition as of an hour and a half ago.

The person killed in the accident has since been identified as 52 year old Elizabeth Pope.

The incident is still under investigation as DPS officials are searching for who they say is a key witness to the accident. The key witness is reportedly the driver of a black vehicle that the 18-Wheeler initially attempted to avoid rear-ending before the accident.
