Local support for the Salvation Army fan drive

News

Westlake Ace Hardware in San Angelo recently hosted a fan drive donation benefit for the Salvation Army and San Angelans donated over $2,500 which purchased nearly 200 new box fans for families in need.

Operations manager Rand Smith told KLST and KSAN News a little bit about why this was so important for them to do saying, “Westlake Ace Hardware participates because we’re part of the community, and we want to give back to the community. It’s part of our core values: service, respect, and passion. The goal is to help folks, my drive is the make sure that we are asking folks for donations; my goal is to make sure that we are doing everything that we possibly can. “

San Angelo’s newly minted Salvation Army Major Stan Carr told us that, in a region where daily highs commonly hover in three-digit temperatures, the fan drive was extraordinarily critical.

In an interview with KLST and KSAN News Carr said, “a couple things come to mind very quickly. One, just getting to San Angelo and realizing just how hot it is; the need for air-conditioning…[is a bit] taken for granted but there are so many folks that don’t have that opportunity; and so a fan to keep the air moving is absolutely critical for some, for some people, literally a matter of survival.”

This being the sixth year that Westlake Ace Hardware has participated in the fan drive, the employees let us know that they were really enthusiastic about giving back to their community. The store came in with the highest amount of donations for the district, due in large part to Diana Salazar, who drew in the bulk of their donations.

On Wednesday the 25th of July from 5 – 7 P.M. the Salvation Army on 3rd street in San Angelo will be distributing the fans to those in need. To qualify one will need to bring their ID, proof of residence, income statement, or a letter that shows they are receiving government assistance. For more information about eligibility to receive a fan, contact our local Salvation Army command office.
