TxDOT marks Earth Day with clean air tips for motorists

In commemoration of Earth Day on Monday (April 22), the Texas Department of Transporation’s “Drive Clean Texas” campaign is asking Texas drivers to do their part to make sure every breath of air is clean and healthy.

TxDOT says that emission from cars and trucks make up half of all air pollution in some areas of the Lone Star State. El Paso, Dallas/Ft. Worth and Houston do not currently meet federal air quality standards (as established by the Clean Air Act) because air pollutant levels are too high. Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Beaumont-Port Arthur, Tyler and VIctoria are close to exceeding federal air quality standard requirements.

TxDOT’s “Drive Clean Texas” campaign has developed simple vehicle maintenance tips and recommended changes in driving habits to help motorists reduce vehicle emissions and cause less air pollution while also saving money on car maintenence and fuel costs.

Tips from the “Drive Clean Texas” campaign:

  • Keep vehicles well-maintained and inflate tires to their reccomended air pressure.
  • Properly fill up vehicles by tightly sealing the gas cap and not topping off the gas tank.
  • Drive smart by braking slowly and gradually, obeying speed limits and not idling your vehicle while waiting in a drive-thru.
  • Take public transportation, bike or walk.
  • Avoid agressive driving.
