This is prime flu season and some experts are now saying this year’s outbreak could become an epidemic.

In the Concho Valley, Shannon’s chief medical officer says Tom Green County is listed as one of the Texas counties with what he calls a “very high proportion” of reported flu cases.

It’s becoming dangerous because of a flu strain called H-3-N-2 that is somewhat resistant to the current flu vaccine.

“We have had a few deaths here related to the flu like illness with elderly patients. We have some of those every year it’s just some are more common this year,” said Dr. Chris Barnett, Shannon Hospital Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. Barnett says flu shots will protect against strains of the flu that are not the H-3-N-2 strain.

Although shots take about two weeks to take effect and that we’re about halfway into this year’s flu season.
