Grease spill closes streets, restaurant for hours

Local News

At approximately 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2018, a malfunctioning grease trap released much of its contents into The Original Henry’s parking lot in the 3000 block of Sherwood Way.

The thick, gooey grease leaked into the gutters of A&M Avenue, and cars traversing through the muck tracked it blocks away from the restaurant before responders could cordon off the area to traffic.

San Angelo REACT was activated to partition off the streets surrounding Henry’s while city crews spread dirt and sand to help soak up the mess. A sand truck, front end loader, dump trucks and other equipment, plus over a dozen workers were mobilized to contain the goo.

Henry’s closed its doors to the public as its parking lot,  2 blocks of A&M Avenue and parts of West Harris Avenue were roped off while crews attempted clean-up.

The cleanup was wrapping up at 5:30 p.m. as four lumbering street sweepers slowly scoured the still-closed streets and a Bobcat loader zipped back-and-forth across Henry’s parking lot spreading absorbtive dirt. Employees were seen coming back into the building to get ready for reopening of the popular restaurant.
