For Now San Angelo Railway Museum Will Operate On A Month To Month Lease

News

Council members met during a closed session about the future of the San Angelo Railway Museum.

They voted to allow the Railway Museum to continue to operate on a month to month lease for the next six months at the Santa Fe Train Depot.

The current 20-year lease expires next week and city officials have expressed concern about the maintenance and funding for the historic museum during  lease renewal discussions.

“But anywhere along that way somebody could say we don’t have the right people or we don’t have the plan. This isn’t going to work for us and if its not going to work for them, its not going to work for the city,” said San Angelo Mayor, Brenda Gunter.

Many residents are extremely against any kind of removal or closure of the Railway Museum, such as Former Railway Museum Director, Shannon Carpenter who said, “That museum belongs there, there is no other organization, no other company that belongs in that depot beside the railway and heritage museum of San Angelo.”

The Railway Museum will operate on a month to month lease for the next six months at which point both the board and city officials will re-evaluate.
