The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has proposed to the Public Safety Commission (PSC)  a release 117 commissioned officers by May 31, 2018.

The proposal is in response to budget cuts totaling $50 million enacted by the 85th legislative session for the department. A total of 177 commissioned positions and 148 non-commissioned positions are affected.

The DPS, according to a news release by Steven C. McCraw, director of the department, will be able to address the elimination of 60 commissioned officer positions through attrition to meet the 177 eliminated positions number. All of the 148 non-commissioned positions will be able to be addressed by attrition.

“This was a very difficult but necessary decision to address the budget cuts,” wrote McCraw, “Additional details will be forthcoming to those who are impacted.”
