Council votes on ordinance that prevents smoking in city parks

Local News

At this week’s city council meeting, members discussed no more smoking in city parks or near children’s playgrounds.

They gave preliminary approval to the proposal, which some say cannot be enforced.

When it comes to smoking in the city of San Angelo, there are laws that prohibit the activity in certain areas like outdoor sports arenas, stadiums and amphitheaters.

But when it comes to smoking near areas where children are at play, the law is a little blurred and the amendment to the law was one of many topics discussed at Tuesday’s City Council Meeting.

The proposed amendment to the ordinance would clarify smoking near city parks — where smoking would be prohibited within 50 feet of park playgrounds, park pavilions and other areas that are designated with signage as no smoking.

The amendment to the ordinance passed with a 5-1 vote.

City council will consider final approval at the next council meeting on May 2nd.
