Central High School swim coach David Hague has been named National High School Boys’ Swimming Coach of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA).

Hague is retiring this after leading Central’s swim programs for the past 41 years. In his final season at Central, the boys and girls swim teams both swept the District 2-6A titles. The Bobcats have won 9 consecutive district titles and 13 of the last 15 titles and the girls have won 10 of the last 13 district titles.

His illustrious career includes 33 combined district championships, two regional championships, 43 combined District Coach of the Year awards and eight combined Regional Coach of the Year selections. Coach Hague was the Texas Class 6A State Boys’ Coach of the Year in 2016.

“We are extremely pleased to honor Coach Hague,” said Eric Hess, Executive Director of the NHSCA. “He has established San Angelo Central as one of the consistent swim programs in Texas. He exhibits a strong dedication to supporting and developing his high school student-athletes in the classroom and outside of it.”

Hague is the first Texas coach to be named the NHSCA National Boys’ Swimming Coach of
the Year. Coach Hague has received a plaque and will be displayed in the National High School Digital
Sports Hall of Fame.

Hague was an All-State/All-New England high school swimmer in Cranston, Rhode Island and a NCAA Division II All American while attending Keene State College in New Hampshire.

Coach Hague still competes in U.S. Masters Swimming, and is consistently ranked in the top 10 in his age group. He has set several Masters National and Masters World records in individual events and relay events. Coach Hague was the 2014 recipient of the TISCA Theron Pickle Lifetime Achievement Award.
