Husband arrested in teacher’s death

Investigators arrested the husband of a Texas elementary school on Tuesday, hours after authorities say he killed her. The Cameron County Sheriff’s office believes this all stems from a domestic dispute. After 12:00 AM Tuesday, they received a call from the victim’s son after midnight, saying that his father, Alva Mata Jr. was trying to kill his mother.

According to Sheriff Lucio when deputies got to the home, 36-year-old Jessica Cortina was found dead with a gunshot wound to the chest. 39-year-old Mata quickly drove away from the scene, but was capture later Tuesday morning.

In Sheriff Lucio’s words, “I knew them not too well but I knew them, the man would help me, he was an air conditioner man and would fix my air conditioner. I also knew the lady and would see her at school, she was a teacher.”

Mata is currently at the jail waiting to be formally charged. After the shooting Harlingen consolidated independent school district briefly put Wilson Elementary on lockdown and in a statement they said, quote: “We offer our condolences to her family and friends in this difficult time. Offering emotional support to our students and staff members, counseling services will be available to provide any help needed as they grieve.”
