27th annual Business Expo shows eighth graders how to network

The 27th annual Business Expo had 75 exhibitors and expected a crowd between one thousand to two thousand people.

The President and CEO of Chamber of Commerce, Bruce Partain, said it’s all about “getting out and shaking hands with people and meeting them and  hearing about them, asking questions and saying ‘hey you know maybe I can use this product or service.'”

All of these companies are networking with people of all ages including the program that the Workforce Solution has started that involves kids as young as eighth grade.

Director of Education and Training of the Workforce, Amber McNew, says that “prior to their arrival we sent them little projects to do, so identifying what their interests are, some little assessments.”

They also created a one-page resume.

“They are going to do little mock interviews and engage with the employers and the exhibitors. And the exhibitors will judge them on what they did and how their resumes looked,” says McNew.

The main topic they want to stress is, that not one company is tailored to one specific job. They also give tips to those who are coming to look for one.

“Research the company that you’re applying for because that matters. Be sure to write your resume. Get somebody to look at it. Be sure to dress appropriate for that business and for that interview,” says McNew.

She says they would like to educate and train the students in hopes they will stay in San Angelo.

“Think outside the box,” says McNew.

The exhibitors ranged from military to construction to finance and many subject matters in between.
