WACO, Texas (KXAN) – A man who appeared to have locked himself inside a trunk of a car and tried to set it on fire while a baby was inside the vehicle has been arrested in Waco.

The incident happened early Thursday morning in a parking lot of the McLennan Community College in Waco. A spokesperson for the college said an officer on patrol found the car with an infant locked inside.

When the officer was able to get the baby out, he noticed smoke coming from the trunk. KWTK, KXAN’s sister station in Waco, reports other personnel on the scene were able to open the trunk, where they found the suspect, identified as Jacob Russell Laskowski, 24.

The fire department report indicates Laskowski, who is a student at the school, locked himself in the trunk and started the fire using lighter fluid and charcoal.

KWTK reports a woman might have originally been with the man but was not present when officers arrived.

Both the suspect and baby were not injured in the fire. Laskowski has been charged with injury to a child by smoke inhalation, abandoning or endangering a child and aggravated assault with intent to cause death.
