The San Angleo Police Department is being proactive in hopes of preventing a crime increase in the surrounding community.

According to National Insurance Crime Bureau representative, John Mitchell, a increase in car thefts is a very likely possibility.

"The Midland-Odessa area is currently the number one theft location in the state of Texas. This is attributed to the oil boom," stated Mitchell.

For the first time in five years, the San Angelo Police Department hosted a NICB sponsored event which focused on vehicle thefts.

Mitchell believes this couldn't come at a better time.

"We're teaching how to recover stolen equipment and vehicles," continued Mitchell.

Mitchell suggested never leaving items in the vehicle and using antitheft devices such as kill switches, transponders, and chips in keys.
