It's a safe statement to say that Joe Lombard is a Texas High School Basketball Legend, he's won 1190 games. The Hall of Fame coach raised another Girls Basketball Coach as his son Tate is now having success in Wall.
Joe Lombard: "we didn't really know anything else for him to do, and so that was his decision. Around basketball as much as he was growing up there wasn't much choice as what else he could do with his life."
Tate Lombard: "I didn't really know anything else to do, just follow fathers foot steps a little bit. It's something that I saw how much he enjoyed coaching and I have the same feeling for it, something that I really have a passion for and it's because of him."
Joe's Canyon Lady Eagles will play in Austin on Thursday while Tate's Lady Hawks will play on Friday. It provides a great place for a family reunion.
Joe: "In fact it's so exciting my 91 year old mother, I don't think she would have come down just to watch us this year but she's coming down to watch Tate."
Joe knows how much work it is to win a State Title, he's done it 15 times. 9 championships with Canyon and 6 with Nazareth. He sees his son Tate as someone who who works hard enough to get it done too.
Joe: "He's smart and he works hard and he tries to get better. He's doing all the right things. He has a good team, he has some talent and they have a chance to do some damage down there."
If both of the coaches teams come through and earn wins in their semi-finals games, it'll set up one magical Saturday in Austin.
Tate: "If we were to both be able to play on Saturday, we would play in the same session. So we'd play back to back, so that would be kind of fun."
Wall vs. Hallettsville on Friday morning at 8:30 in Austin at UT.
