"A Modern Pregnancy" Part One

Expecting anchor Skylar Gallop begins her four part series "A Modern Pregnancy".

In an ever developing medical age, one thing is sure: today's pregnancy is not the same as generations past....

In what will be a four part series, airing each Monday of November, expecting anchor Skylar Gallop took the opportunity to sit down with local healthcare professionals about "A Modern Pregnancy"...

Recommendations for a healthy and happy pregnancy have certainly changed in the past decade or so. A new mother’s choices begin with selecting a healthcare provider. There's the traditional obstetrician, or you may choose the increasing trend of hospital midwives. Before you rule this option out, however, know that this is not limited to the in-home bath tub birth that may come to mind.

For many women that may be attracted to a traditional midwife-assisted childbirth, their concern lies in being an ambulance ride away from emergency medical care... that's where these hospital midwives come in handy...

There are several differences between OBs and midwives, an m-d at the end of their title for one. A certified nurse midwife is a registered nurse that has specialized training in midwifery. Regardless the training, both agree on the importance of a healthy diet.

We know now that excessive weight gain during pregnancy can increase a mother's risk of gestational diabetes, contribute to physical strain during labor, and studies have suggested links to the risk of adult obesity and autism for baby. And those extra pounds can exaggerate many of the aches and pains commonly associated with pregnancy...

Health care providers are stressing the importance of exercise while expecting, too. In addition to strengthening muscles for the actual act of childbirth, prenatal exercise helps with stretching ligaments, and can be a big help when it comes to shedding those pregnancy pounds after delivery...

Local healthcare providers say diet and exercise are the most emphasized changes they stress in a modern pregnancy... and they're the best ways to facilitate happy and healthy mother and baby.
