Attorney General Greg Abbott, the leading Republican candidate for Texas governor, has raised $2.45 million over the last month and has already put $30 million in the bank for his campaign, officials said Monday.
Abbott, a prodigious fundraiser and heir to a vast Republican donor network, faces little competition for his party’s primary election and has already been engaging with his likely Democratic opponent, state Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth.
His campaign released the raw fundraising totals to news outlets ahead of a midnight deadline to report spending and fundraising activities to the Texas Ethics Commission — in "8-day reports" that all statewide candidates have to file in the week before the March 4 primary. The campaign said 98 percent of its donations came from inside Texas.
"Texans from across the state are joining Greg Abbott in building a strong campaign and a brighter future for Texas," Abbott campaign manager Wayne Hamilton said in a written statement. "As the campaign progresses, Greg Abbott will continue to travel the state, speaking with and hearing from Texans who share his goal to improve Texas’ education system, grow jobs, and strengthen individual freedom."
The latest fundraising period covers activity between Jan. 24 and Feb. 22. Details on the size of donations and the identity of the contributors were not yet available.
Davis, who has cultivated a national network of small donors after her anti-abortion filibuster, has not yet released her fundraising figures for the period. Davis counts money going into both her gubernatorial campaign and a joint fundraising operation with the Democratic group Battleground Texas, in addition to her old Senate committee.
At last count, Davis had about $10 million in the bank among the three entities, or about a third of what Abbott has raised for his effort.
