ASU Softball Rolling Along 04-14-14

Angelo State Softball holds a slim lead over West Texas A&M in the Lone Star Conference standings with two weeks to play. ASU has also put together a nice few weeks of ball.

Randy Ward: "The Belles have won 13 straight games, including a two game sweep at nationally ranked Saint Mary's in San Antonio. That two game set saw the Belles be down 6 to 1 in the 6th inning before battling back to win 7-6.

Travis Scott: "It didn't look good, but our team battled and it was really fun to watch and it was almost, to me it was kind of a stunner when the game was over it was like, 'we really won that game.' It did not appear as if we were going to be able to do it so I was very proud of the way our team battled against a great pitcher."

While it was the offense that scored enough runs to complete the comeback against the Rattlers, it's the defense that Coach Scott feels will be factor to keep the wins coming.

Scott: "We've been playing very good defense, Darian Dunn has been solid at 3rd since we had to move her because of injuries. Ambra Hill continues to play better and better at short stop and Micherie Koria is fun to watch at second."

With a one game lead in the Lone Star Conference standings, the pressure is still there to keep winning, and that can sort of make each game have a playoff feeling.

Scott: "In a way you have a little of a playoff feel but it's not the playoffs, we know that. It's a different atmosphere come playoff time, we have a lot of players with a lot of experience in doing that so that's going to be a plus to us come late in the year."

Seven more games remain on the regular season slate, then it really will be playoff time with the Conference and NCAA Tournaments looming.

Scott: "The fact that the playoffs are right around the corner is a good thing for us right now because we're in good shape."
