Two Killed in Crash, Saturday Night

Two young people lost their lives in a four vehicle crash, near Mertzon.

Just before eight, Saturday evening, Troopers say a black Honda Civic headed eastbound on US 67 drove off the roadway then struck the semi-trailer of a truck when driving back onto the road.

A silver Honda Civic swerved into a westbound lane to avoid the crash, but collided with another large truck.

The passenger, 22-year-old Emily Word, and the driver, 21-year-old Stephen Wadsworth, traveling in the silver Civic were pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers say, the driver of the semi and a passenger in the black Civic were transported to Shannon Medical Center with minor injuries.

According to officials, the driver of the black Honda Civic, 20-year-old Richard Garcia III, is facing several charges. Charges include two counts of criminal negligent homicide, accident involving injury, racing on a highway, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Garcia remains in the Tom Green County Jail, Sunday night. The four vehicle crash is still under investigation.
