Councilman Johnny Silvas is running for his fourth term for SMD 3. This race, he is focusing on improving city streets, specifically Bell Street and Oak Street.
"All of council is interested in water, number one. But, more and more, I hear from people every week about Bell Street, about Oak Street," Silvas stated.
There are a total of 6 streets on the 2014 Capital Improvement Plan. Right now, city council is considering using an eighth of a cent from the half-cent sales tax to fix the roads. If council approves this, residents will have the option to vote on this measure in November.
"I know we're talking to staff right now and they're coming up with some funding mechanisms - not tax related - so there's no tax increase. we're looking very, very hard at some different scenarios," explained Silvas.
While in office, he helped fix potholes and reconstruct some of the roads on East Harris, Concho Street, and Magdalen Street by asking the City Operations Director, Shane Kelton, to fix specific issues.
"Some of the alleyways in the Downtown area, sometime they need a little touch up... some TLC and I've been able to reach out to Shane Kelton," Silvas continued.
Silvas said fixing Bell Street could not be more important and paving the way for future generations is a crucial.
"I want to be a part of that. I want to, at least, light the fuse for the people coming down the road," finished Silvas.
