SAISD Free Meals Program

San Angelo students get out of school for the summer this Friday. For those parents and children that rely on school meals, the Director of Food Services, Kim Carter, says why the summer free meal program is a blessing.

"That kids dont have to go hungry this summer because hunger doesn't take a vacation."

Last summer the district served over 17 thousand breakfasts and close to 33 thousand lunches.

The program has been running 21 years and does not cost the district a penny.

"This is a program that is completely funded by the Texas Department of Agriculture and through the United States Department of Agriculture."

Carter says on average a thousand kids eat breakfast and two thousnad come for lunch daily.

"Children need nourishment to learn and to play and for our community it helps keep them healthy during the summer."

"In this program between the ages of 1-18 eats absolutely free, there is no need for proof of income or parents don't have to fill out any kind of paper work . All we need them to do is show up and have a free meal."

Kaitlin Moore says, "If you were wondering if mom and dad can come grab a bite to eat too, carter says parents are more than welcome to join. Breakfast for adults is a dollar 75 and lunch is three dollars."

The program begins june 4th and continues through July 25th. SAISD is providing 6 locations for lunch and 7 locations for breakfast around San Angelo. Breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 and then lunch is from 11-1.
