New "Urgent Care" on the Southwest Side

A new urgent care clinic is coming to the southwest side of San Angelo, we talked with Shannon Medical Center representatives about the convenient medical care offered to patients.

We often find ourselves on-the-go and our medical needs don't always fit into normal business hours. Shannon Medical Center CEO, Bryan Horner, says "Urgent Care" clinics are the new alternative to ER's in non-life-threatening situations.

"What we have seen is that these urgent cares are really meeting consumer nature of what patients are looking for as far as convenience, location, accessibility and hours when they need that as opposed to an emergency department," Horner said.

Shannon Medical Center is opening an extended-hours walk-in clinic, on the southwest side of San Angelo.

The growth in San Angelo is calling for a third Shannon urgent care at the busy intersection on Sherwood Way and Sunset Drive.

Urgent Care West will be in the old Big-Five Sporting Goods store location.

"We've got I don't know how many hotels going up around us and consumers driving by here everyday for shopping, and so we just feel if someone is ill in those hours we'll be able to meet those needs and again hopefully avoid going to an emergency room with longer waits and higher costs," Horner said.

One hundred patients are seen daily at each urgent care location.

"What we've seen with urgent care is an increase in visits as well as a decrease in emergent need visits at Shannon," Horner said.

Urgent Care West is expected to begin seeing patients January 2015.
