What you should know about MRSA-Infections

San Angelo, TX - Widespread MRSA-Infections are rare but it has happened in West Texas before. In fact, an Ector County family faced an infection in their household after saving a rescue dog who had been hit by a car.

A dozen of the other rescue dogs in their house also contracted the illness.

Though the family and most of the rescue dogs are recovering now--health officials say these sort of outbursts may happen when a person's skin makes contact with an open and infected wound and that person fails to take proper measures to clean both the wound and the skin making contact with it.

Health officials say the infection has also become immune to a number of antibiotics and are fearful the ones working now will also be ineffective in the future.

Shana Jones is an Infection Control Practitioner at San Angelo Community Medical Center and says there are some signs to look out for, such as redness, a lot of drainage or "puss" coming out of a wound.

If someone sees these symptoms and home remedies aren't working, then it's time to see the doctor.

The best treatment is to sanitize items you believe someone else may have handled, especially when it comes to gym equipment.

You should also be aware of doing work with your hands with open wounds--gardening, cooking, etc.--as any sort of dirt or foreign bacteria may enter the open wound.

Above all else. Just make sure to wash your hands thoroughly following work completed--whether it's at the gym, gardening, cooking or anything else.
