SAN ANGELO, TX - In your top local stories with Kaitlin Moore, a San Angelo man and woman are safe, but are now looking for a new place to live after a fire destroyed their trailer.
Monday morning fire fighters responded to a home in the 1400 block of Martin Street for a structure fire.
When San Angelo fire and rescue units arrived, behind the home flames from a travel trailer grew bigger.
Inside the trailer was a man and woman asleep in their bedroom. Luckily they made it out in time.
Fire officials say the couple living there are related to the homeowner.
"Under city ordinance you're not supposed to live long-term like that. You can visit someone and I believe it's 2 or 3 weeks that you can stay like that, but then you have to move the trailer and go somewhere else for a while and come back later. It's more common than we like and it's our economy," said Joanna Jackson, fire investigator for the SAFD.
Officials say an over-powered extension cord sparked the blaze.
The couple was treated at the scene for smoke and heat exposure.
The family's dog died in the fire.
