Hundreds Crowd Sunset Mall for Sephora Grand Opening

Free Samples and Gift Card Give-away

SAN ANGELO, TX - Around seven in the morning on June 23, close to 100 people crowded the Sunset Mall doors for the grand opening of Sephora inside J.C. Penny's.

"I mean we knew Sephora would be good, but no one could've predicted what happened this morning." said Tod Herring, general manager of J.C. Penny's. "As we got a couple hours out is was 700 to 800 people, then over a thousand and I think we ended up somewhere between 13 and 14 hundred people."

The store doors didn't open until 10:00am and some teenagers in the community camped outside the mall since midnight.

Community leaders such as Mayor Brenda Gunter joined the store staff for a ribbon cutting just moments before the gates were opened for the hundreds of customers to come shop.

The first 100 through the door received gift cards and the first 600 got makeup bags full of samples.

"I heard there would be goodie bags so I came to check that out, I was going to come to get the gift cards but I didn't wake up early enough," said customer Lupita Lulo.

Senior V.P. of Sephora, Angela Swanner said this was one of the biggest opening she has ever seen. "I will tell you I have been to so many openings, I have never seen an opening in a town like this, its incredible."

Unlike other makeup stores in the area, Herring says Sephora makes selling cosmetics a little more exciting. "its not just buying cosmetics, or buying a product. Its an experience, and the whole facial make over process within Sephora is uniquely different."

"The amount of excitement that they have that we finally have a Sephora in their community and not having to drive to Austin or even Abilene I think its going to say wonders for what this team is going to be able to do," said Swanner.
