FORT CHADBOURNE, TX - CONCHOVALLEYHOMEPAGE.COM EXCLUSIVE
Gold Star Families sat somber inside the Fort Chadbourne Museum Saturday, November 18, 2017 as World War II Veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Hershel "Woody" Williams spoke during the dedication ceremony of the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument.
Williams related the deep emotional journey that a Gold Star Family endures and how the dedication of this monument stands as a testament that the West Texas community will honor and remember that journey.
The monument is the only one of its kind in West Texas.
"We built monuments to the soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice, but we had nothing to honor the families of those soldiers," said Williams. "This monument is to let these families know that their ultimate sacrifice, the sacrifice of their child, their loved one, will never be forgotten. In some way this may serve as a final piece in the grieving process, that there is somewhere to go that what they have gone through is remembered and the experience shared with others."
