"4-H Whiz Bang" Event Kicks Off Saturday Morning

The annual "Tom Green County 4-H Whiz Bang" event kicks off tomorrow morning at the new shooting facility. Nearly 100 competitors from across the state will compete for their place at the state finals this summer.

"The shooting sports is something that's passionate, especially to those in West Texas," Shooting Sports Coach and Volunteer, Tom Thompson said.

Thompson works alongside dozens of shooters in the Tom Green County 4-H program.

Saturday morning, about 30 active shooters have their eye fixated on the targets.

For the first time, almost 100 competitors from around the state will be at the new facility for the "Tom Green County Whiz Bang Competition."

Senior One Shooter, Emily Harness, has participated in the program for four years.

"Well it just teaches you how to use a gun and have fun with it," Harness said.

Recently, Harness won 'Ladies High Overall,' but Saturday she hopes to win 'High Overall' in the "Whiz Bang Competition."

"It's just exciting just being able to come out here and being able to win something," Harness said.

For ten years, Senior Two Shooter, Cody Hurt, has participated in the 4-H program. Above all, he says he enjoys meeting new people.

"I've watched these kids shoot from whenever they first started to where they are now; just barely breaking a few targets and now they're competing actually," Hurt said.

Thompson says after a year long process and generous donations from the community, participants have a new facility to practice at.

"What's good about this field, with donations and further progress we'll expand this field where it can accommodate maybe 70 to 80 shooters that come out and practice, and we can practice 40 to 50 at a time," Thompson said.

Practice is fundamental in the sport, and Hurt says the new facility is much more convenient.

"The new location helps me come out here anytime I want to practice more, and it's closer to my house," Hurt said.

Saturday, competitors have a chance to reach the state finals this summer in San Antonio, TX.

"It's great to bring all those people here, and show off a really nice shooting range on our home turf," Thompson said.

About 30  local shooters will be competing Saturday morning at the Tom Green County 4-H Shooting Sports Complex. The complex is located at 3444 N US Hwy 277. Shooting begins at 8:30 a.m.
