Add a pinch of Iron Chef and Chopped, a tablespoon of originality, and three Tom Green County 4-H students; mix them all together and you have Texas's top food challenge team.
Food Challenge Coach, Sandy Seidel, says for the first time, the Great American Seafood Cook-off invited Tom Green County to represent Texas.
"I'm hoping the girls will just go out there and have fun with it, we'll see what happens. It's a win-win because we get to go to New Orleans and represent the state of Texas," Seidel said.
The 4-H team put their chef hats on, and cooked up the tasty entrée, "Texas Summer Seafood Delight," a recipe representing Texas on a plate.
Katie Gilbert says, you need to have a vision when preparing a dish.
"We are good at what we do. We practice a lot and having won and having the experience of the years behind us makes us feel confident in this competition," Gilbert said.
The entrée includes some of Texas's largest commodities including red cabbage, pecans, Fredericksburg peaches and being that this is a seafood cook-off, shrimp and crab cakes tie in the gulf.
"You may not like it but you still have to sell it. You have to make 'you' look like we love it," Seidel said.
Lacey Morris says, working with seafood is the most challenging aspect.
"We really have to practice and know what we're going to be doing and what our part is in making this dish," Morris said.
Gilbert says, she's both excited and nervous to represent the great state of Texas.
"I feel we have a pretty good chance and if not you know we would've learned a lot, and at least gotten Texas into this competition because in previous years Texas hasn't participated and so we're the first team to have been invited so that's also an incredible honor," Gilbert said.
Win or lose, these girls will represent Texas in New Orleans, and cook their hearts out to make the most delicious "Texas Summer Seafood Delight".
The Tom Green County 4-H team will represent Texas at the Great American Seafood Cook-off in New Orleans, Sunday, August 3rd.
